Where to stay in Martindale for the Water Safari

If you're searching for a five-bedroom house in Martindale, start with the honest arithmetic: our place here has six. Pool, Hot Tub, Dock & Gym | Riverfront Retreat, which we call Hilco, is a six-bedroom riverfront estate that sleeps up to 24. That's one more bedroom than you asked for, and for a Water Safari weekend that extra room is usually the one you end up grateful for, because crews, drivers and bank support don't arrive in tidy numbers and they don't all go to bed at the same hour.

Five-bedroom houses do exist around Martindale, listed by other owners and other managers. What we can tell you about is ours, and why its particular shape suits a race weekend better than a straightforward five-bedroom house would.

Six bedrooms, three roofs, one stretch of river

Hilco isn't a single house with six doors off a hallway. It's a four-bedroom main house plus two private casitas, all on the same private riverfront property. Twenty-four people can sleep here across three separate buildings, which is the whole point: during the Safari, your group will split into shifts whether you plan for it or not. Drivers chasing checkpoints come and go at odd hours. Paddlers who've been on the water since dawn want blackout curtains and silence. Grandparents and small kids want a kitchen and a normal bedtime.

Put all of that under one roof and somebody's night gets wrecked. Put it across a main house and two casitas, each with its own door, and the late shift can come in at two in the morning without waking the eight people sleeping in the main house. We built it this way because we're a family of six and that's how we actually travel: everyone together when it matters, a door to close when it doesn't.

The estate is professionally managed and we're Superhosts, though we don't live in Martindale. We're usually about an hour away if you need us.

Why the private dock matters more than the bedroom count

The river here is spring fed, clear and cool all year, and your group has a private stretch of it with a dock for the length of your stay. There's no public access nearby. Most afternoons the only traffic past the bank is a kayaker drifting through.

That's unusual on this river, and on a Water Safari weekend it's close to decisive. The public access points around Martindale get busy, particularly Allen Bates River Park, which is the town's largest and has picnic tables, grills, a playscape and swings alongside its river access. Fine for a family afternoon. Less fine when you want to put a boat in quietly at first light, or run a practice stretch, or simply sit on a bank and wait for your paddler without negotiating a parking lot.

From the dock you can swim, fish, paddle, or float back to your own property at the end of a run. It's the difference between visiting the San Marcos and living on it for a few days.

Cottonseed Rapids on the San Marcos River near Martindale, Texas, with the old concrete dam visible on river right

The course runs right past town

Martindale sits in the opening miles of the 262-mile race from San Marcos to Seadrift, which has run every year since 1963 and starts the second Saturday of June. That makes the town one of the best spectating bases on the entire course, because the landmarks stack up within a few miles of each other.

  • Cottonseed Rapids, at mile 9.12, is the best known rapid on this part of the river. It can be run at most water levels, and you can scout it by stopping river right where the old concrete dam stands.
  • Martindale Dam, at mile 10.66, requires a portage. The low water crossing follows about a tenth of a mile downstream.
  • Cummings Dam, at mile 5.27, is portaged right or left.
  • The official driving guide puts fifteen minutes between the Cottonseed checkpoint and the Martindale checkpoint, which tells you how tight the geography is.

One practical warning from the race's own directions: the route to Martindale Dam and bridge goes down Diveney Drive, an unsigned one-lane dirt road with a one-lane bridge, and parking there is very limited. Spectators commonly park up on River Road and walk down. Hilco allows a maximum of six vehicles per reservation and street parking isn't permitted in the neighborhood, so a group of twenty-four is carpooling anyway. Sort out who's driving before you arrive and the rest of the weekend gets easier.

If you're here off-season, the Safari calendar runs year round: the Texas Jr. Water Safari in September, the Safari Seminar in February, and the Texas River Marathon and Gator Chase in May. The 2026 seminar is in Martindale itself, at 413 Main Street, right next to the Martindale River Cafe.

What the group does between shifts

Race weekends have long gaps in them. Someone's always waiting for someone else. The property is set up for exactly that kind of dead time: a pool and hot tub, a fire pit, long tables built for dinners that run past dark, and a playground and trampoline that will absorb the children of the group entirely.

There's also a functional fitness gym in the workshop, which sounds like a flourish until you've watched a paddler who's been sitting in a boat for eight hours try to unlock their shoulders. An outdoor kitchen and outdoor shower handle the mess that comes with river days. Pets are welcome, which matters when the dog is part of the chase crew.

For a group arriving with a toddler as well as a race entry, the main house keeps a crib and a high chair, so you're not driving to Buda for baby gear at nine at night.

Town, and one worthwhile drive

Martindale is small, and that's the appeal. The Martindale River Cafe & Mercantile on Main Street is the town's best-reviewed restaurant and puts on free concerts Friday and Saturday nights at eight, featuring local artists. Hours have shifted around, so call ahead at (512) 668-9049 rather than turning up hungry. Dining, live music and shopping sit about ten minutes from the property.

If you have a spare day while the paddlers are downriver, Palmetto State Park is the one to take. It sits in Gonzales County between Luling and Gonzales, on the San Marcos River with an oxbow lake, and the trails are flat, shaded and easy: the Palmetto Trail takes about half an hour, the Ottine Swamp Trail about an hour, and the San Marcos River Trail about an hour and a half. It's a short drive off Interstate 10, and reachable from Martindale within the morning.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't

Hilco works for multi-generational families, multi-family groups, and friends who want the river without the crowd. It's built for family reunions, wellness retreats, graduation weekends and corporate off-sites, and for race crews who need to sleep in rotations.

It isn't a party house, and we're direct about that. Quiet hours run from 9 PM to 8 AM with no outdoor music, only registered guests are allowed on the property, and exterior cameras monitor guest count. This is a quiet river community and we'd like to stay on good terms with it. If your weekend plan involves noise after dark, book somewhere else and everyone will be happier.

One more thing worth knowing: this is genuine Texas riverfront. You'll see wildlife and you'll meet insects, despite regular pest control. We leave repellent out for you.

Booking a Safari weekend

Nightly rates here span a wide range depending on season and length of stay, and June, with the race, is the busiest week on this river all year. If the Water Safari is your reason for coming, book earlier than feels necessary.

Tell us your group when you enquire: how many paddlers, how many drivers, how many people who just want to sit by the pool. The three-building layout can be organised around a race schedule in a way a single five-bedroom house cannot, and it's worth planning who sleeps where before you arrive rather than at midnight on Friday.
